Chris JJ Mulder

Chris Mulder (1951) studied medicine in Amsterdam, specialised in Internal medicine and Haematology in Leiden University. His PhD was about meningitis. During his rotation as part of Internal medicine he diagnosed by coincidence an IBD patient with coeliac disease (supervisor Salvador Pena), which changed his interest. He moved back to Amsterdam to become a gastroenterologist ( supervisor Guido Tytgat). He worked on IBD (topical steroids and 5ASA). In 1989 he started as gastroenterologist in a teaching hospital in Arnhem and worked on diagnostic criteria for coeliac disease. He worked together with Mike Marsh and validated the so-called Marsh criteria with Kamran Rostami. Later he worked on refractory CD and returned to Amsterdam to become head of department of GE at the Free University (2002). He started reregistration of thioguanine (2001) instead of azathioprine for IBD, and modified intervention endoscopy with APC and endoscopic treatment of Zenker’s diverticulum since 1994. Since 2017 he stepped down as HOD in Amsterdam , Gerd Bouma took over (R)CD research and the tofacitinib trial. He stopped outclinics and endoscopy in 2025, but remained active in workshops for CD .
